Pain. Often the reason you may find yourself reaching out to your osteopath (or other trusted allied health professional). Pain is a complex experience, shaped differently for every person. It can challenge us in our daily activities, and sometimes start to impact our ability to participate in life the way we want to.
What we don’t always realise is that acute pain and chronic pain are quite different and so are managed really differently!
Madeleine has long taken a special interest in the treatment and management of chronic pain.

HOW CAN I FIX MY CHRONIC PAIN? WHAT CAN I DO FOR CHRONIC PAIN?
Why? Because pain doesn’t discriminate- we all feel it! And like most things, the key to managing and overcoming a problem is to better understand it. The same goes with the pain experience in our bodies- if we can understand what and why it is happening, we can learn to better manage our pain and return to life without it influencing our activities or decisions.
“The good news is that science tells us, really strongly, that an experienced practitioner can help you manage and overcome your persistent pain through education and understanding, a supported return to activities that you enjoy and exercise. ”
More than ever Mad is open to providing care to our Summit Osteopathy community who may be experiencing chronic pain. The osteopathic approach to chronic pain management may look a little different to your normal treatment. We may spend a little more time talking, to really understand the pain experience for you- how it feels, what you can do, what you might be missing. There may be some new information about pain that challenges your current understanding- which is okay. Mad’s approach is such that you can slowly build on the understanding of your body and learn to trust it again.
We will still use manual therapy to provide some relief- because we know this feels good and helps your body cope and heal. But this is only one part of the recovery puzzle!
Mad finds this stuff really exciting- because when she hears things like “my bad back”, “my neck is out again” or “I had to quit golf because of my back pain” - she is confident she can work with her patients to step away from these beliefs and step back towards life and activities that you love- like golf.
Dr Madeleine Goodman (Osteopath) operates at Summit Osteopathy Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Mad is welcoming return and new patients to work with their chronic pain in Perth.
